My Son’s First Baseball Game

Philadelphia Phillies

IMG 1582It was a half decent Sunday afternoon, about 65 degrees, partly sunny. Weather report is calling for spotty showers and maybe a t-storm later in the day. “Hmmm, ok, probably be safe at the Philadelphia Phillies game a 1:30pm,” I think to myself.

Well, definitely NOT the case. The rain came during the two national anthems, Oh Canada! (Toronto Blue Jays were in town) and the Star Spangled Banner. It was just a light trickle of rain while we stood with our hats off, “can I sit down yet, Daddy?”

“Not yet bud,” I said, “We have to stand for our National Anthem.”

Logan was OK with that, up until that point he was so excited about being at the game, it didn’t matter what happened. His excitement started Saturday evening, I’m surprised he even fell asleep! Then when he woke up today he couldn’t wait. We left to pick up my Dad, “Papa”, and continue into Philly for the game.

PLAYBALL!

As the first inning started, the rain was lightly falling. The Phillies managed three quick outs and then they were up to bat. My Dad and I were telling Logan what was going on so he’d understand. He was so happy that the guys were catching the ball!

So Jimmy Rollins steps up to the plate first and starts up with a lead-off single to right. “YEAH!!!!” we all cheer. Logan’s face was priceless, he just looked at me and his face was telling me, “huh? what’s going on?” I had to tell him that the man hit the ball and got on base.

Then Rollins steals second base, I didn’t try to explain that one! Stealing isn’t something I want him to learn (ever).

Finally, before the end of the first inning and the three of us being soaked, Ryan Howard smacks a two-run homer to center field. We all clapped, so did my little buddy.

After sitting about 30 minutes in a light rain we decide it’s time to go inside the Hall of Fame Section at Citizens Bank Park to stay dry and grab a few hot dogs (but not Logan, he’s more of a PB&J kid). We hear that there is now a rain delay (which ends up lasting two hours!)

After eating I took Logan to the bathroom and on our way back we found a science exhibit set up in a side room and inside were a lot of young children and two guys with headsets standing behind a long table. They were using a banana to pound a nail into a piece of wood! That’s right! A banana…one frozen with liquid nitrogen. It was pretty cool and reminded me of high school chemistry class.

0518081503aAfter they showed how the banana froze they started to make ice cream. It was fun to watch all of the kids pour things into a giant bowl. After 30 minutes of explaining things and mixing, the presenters (i guess they were scientists) discussed how to use liquid nitrogen to make ice cream. It immediately freezes whatever the nitrogen touches and evaporates as well. Here are a few pictures of them pouring the liquid nitrogen into the ice cream bowls and making ice cream! It really was neat to watch! And the ice cream tasted great!

So in review, if you ask my son about his first baseball game and what he liked he’ll probably say, “They made ice cream!”
