I Haven’t Been Able to Shake The Weight, Only My Belly

Posted by Jeff on May 23, 2008    161 views    Comments (View Comments)

Hey Dads, how much weight did you gain during each of your wife’s pregnancies? Or the weight you tacked on from nibbling on chicken nuggets or french toast sticks while making you kids meals? Well if you are like me, the addition of our second child also added an addition to my belly.

It All Started Back In 2004

caution overweightWith our first child I didn’t gain a whole lot, my wife was not a huge “craver” of food and I was good when it came to not overeating and watching portion sizes. Well that ALL went out the door when Baby #2 came into our lives (in Aug 2006)! Or maybe it was that our son was almost two years old and eating foods like French toast sticks, Toaster Strudels, PB&J, mac ‘n cheese, etc. I guess it all started with a nibble here and a nibble there.

I am the type of guy that sees a plate of cookies and just can’t resist. I know it’s bad to take the cookie but I always justify it with, “but it’s only one cookie”. Not a good combo, seeing cookie / eating cooking. Really leads to packing on pounds. Portion control is also a major factor, also the super quick dinners and lightning fast eating habits don’t help much, but with both parents working, kids in daycare, we get home around 6pm and create chaos in the kitchen as I prepare dinner (yes I’m the cook in the house and love it!).

Ok so why am I chewing up yours and my time blogging about my lifestyle? Well since August 2006, when our daughter was born I have gained close to 20 pounds. That IS NOT good, NOT healthy and VERY depressing. Also my wife is starting to nag me about it. I appreciate her doing so, but a part of me doesn’t want to give into her pressure.

So what am I to do?

I try to exercise at night but that never works. I just need some personal time to unwind and take care of things. Mornings are rough too but I think if I get up at 5am for a week my body and mind will become used to the routine. My favorite time to get some exercise is 2pm while at work, but I just need to get up from my desk, cut my lunch time short and DO IT!

I think I need more motivation to get me going. My thought is to share this experience with anyone that reads this blog. But how can blogging motivate me to shed my two kid weight gain? By making my weight and diet plan public I can no longer hide behind excuses. Probably enough to really make a difference in my lifestyle and overall self-motivation. I’m going to report in probably weekly so others will read and comment and by doing so I am hoping this will keep me focused because nothing has worked so far.

If you are someone in the same situation or maybe a Dad that did drop the weight, I would LOVE to hear your success stories. Please leave comments with whatever you feel is comfortable.

My weight history:

  • September 2002 – got married, weighed 216
  • October 2004 – first child born, probably 222-225
  • Spring 2006 – was on a Mediterranean Diet and dropped to 211
  • Fall 2006 – daughter born in August, new job in September — 216
  • Now – an all-time high, 233-235!!!

My goal weight is to get below 215. That is a good enough goal for now and will improve my overall health immensely, of course < 200 would be amazing and doable, but let me take my steps one at a time!

If any other blogger would like to guest post on this subject just leave a comment, email me or tweet me on twitter.

Until next week…
