Enjoying His New Ride – Upgrading to a Booster Seat

Posted by Toolbox Dad on August 13, 2009

Ok, today was my 4.5 year old son’s first ride in his new booster seat – drum roll……

…and he loved it! It was THUMBS UP!

kakashi_thumbs_up He thought it was the coolest thing to be able to have more mobility and move around, grab books from the seat next to him (easier) and he even managed to reach out and touch my arm and said, “Cool, Daddy! I can even touch your arm!”

I did tell him that he should always keep his back against the seat while moving like he does on the school bus for his preschool field trips.

He couldn’t wait to get to school and tell his one teacher, Miss Lori, all about the booster seat.  Of course, we had gotten there TOO early and she wasn’t there yet. Maybe tonight at pickup we’ll remind him to tell her.

My wife and I had been contemplating moving him to a booster since he still was squeezing into a normal toddler seat, but decided it was time. He is really starting to “take off” in certain areas such as reading book, learning how to swim and doing more adventurous things…so I feel moving him into the seat is like a “big boy” reward for him doing all the other stuff.  Anyway to help boost his confidence is a good thing in my book and moving him into this seat sure shows him that!

  • Next thing you know he will be the one driving you around!
  • haha! actually I'd like that right now!

I like the booster seats because they're typically easier to remove from the car and clean. My kids are aged 6 and 5, and when we moved them to boosters it was a similarly huge accomplishment. Thanks for the story.
  • Thank you for the comment. Yes agree the booster seat is much easier
to remove to clean or fit in another adult in the back if I have to
drive out at lunchtime. Still waiting for our # 2 to move to a
    booster.
  • That's very exciting! Speaking of child safety seats, my wife and I saw a really little kid (maybe 18 months) being driven in the backseat of a car without ANY car seat, never mind booster. Unbelievable!
  • i've seen that before too! it's insane! was it the parents driving (from
what you could tell?) I've seen grandparents do it. one time I saw 2 kids
bouncing back and forth between the back windows of "Gramma's Car" looking
out at traffic! I should have called the Police.
  • Not only is it a confidence booster for my son but it also became the BOSS chair. He started taking control of the back of our van and barked out orders to the everyone (the wife, our other kids and me)! It was an ego trip!!
  • haha. My son just loves the freedom to reach farther and get things he
wants. Of course the first few days he kept touching me and saying, "Daddy!
    I can touch you!"

    thanks for the comment
